I gave a talk and found myself being one of two women in the room (there were approximately 20 people in the audience). The talk seemed to go well, and there were plenty of questions. However I often didn’t get a chance to respond to questions – because a member of the audience would jump in and try to answer for me! Of course, there is much to be said for a relaxed and constructive discussion session. But this didn’t feel like that. It felt like they’d decided to discuss amongst themselves – I could barely get a word in, and the chair didn’t seem to think there was a problem with this. I don’t *think* that would’ve happened had I not been a young female philosopher.
