How to help

Posted: October 8, 2010 by Jender in Do try this at home!, Good news

I had an unplanned pregnancy during my very first year on the tenure track at a very conservative school that has a phenomenally low percentage of female faculty. I was ashamed, petrified that my career would be totally derailed, and that I would be relegated to the “mommy track” (“Mothers on the Fast Track,” Mary Ann Mason & Eve Mason Ekman). My department chair (male) and my dean (female), however, were both ecstatic for me, and they encouraged me to design my own maternity leave(!). My dean actually said, “Figure out the arrangement that works best for you, and we’ll figure out a way to make it happen.” I almost cried!
