Still the only woman

Posted: October 14, 2010 by Jender in Maleness of philosophy

Recently, my department was involved in a job search. At that time, I was the only woman in the department. There was a lot of pressure from the administration to hire another woman. Throughout the process, the faculty whined about this. And when candidates came to campus, the questions that the women got during their talks were far more hostile and aggressive than the ones that the men got. Of course, the women were seen as not having performed well. In the end, the only women “the department” was interested in were married to men who were also philosophers.
