Our department was instrumental in establishing our current humane family leave policy – any primary caregiver can take a semester without teaching at full pay for a newborn. This began when a member of our department was pregnant and it was explained to the chair how dysfunctional the 6 weeks paid medical leave would be. (Insufficient for the mother, ridiculous to take someone out of the middle 6 weeks of teaching and then bring them back.) So we organized roughly the current system departmentally, collectively agreeing to take up the slack. Some years later another member of our department chaired the university task force which adopted roughly our procedure for the whole university.
