A good environment

My experience as a woman philosophy graduate student was *wonderful*. I attended MIT about ten years ago, where at the time 1/3 of the graduate students were women, and there were two senior women on the faculty (out of ten faculty members). The graduate student body in general was happy and close knit, and we often discussed philosophy in a serious, no-bullshit manner: students didn’t hold back from raising real problems with each others’ work, but nor was there any effort to one-up anyone else. I was always taken seriously by professors and fellow students. The women graduate students also had a good community-within-the-bigger-community, with regular women-in-philosophy dinners during my time in graduate school
