When I had just started out with my PhD, I was pregnant. It was a planned pregnancy – my husband and I didn’t want to wait until I was 40 to have kids. But still, as the pregnancy became more visible, I became more and more reluctant to tell my supervisor (who had no kids of his own) about it. However, he reacted very friendly and positively, and congratulated me. He even sent me a gift when the baby was born, and gave me the opportunity to work mostly at home. I did finish my PhD in under 4 years, and attribute this success in part to my supervisor’s support and respect for my decision.
