About five years ago, I was one of two female students in a graduate seminar of 10 students. At the end of the semester, it became clear that the professor was unable to tell the other female student and me apart – despite the fact that we look nothing alike; she participated in class, I didn’t, etc. Yet the professor knew the names of every male student in the seminar. As my department is unusually inclusive and active in supporting women (grad students and faculty) and other lesser represented groups, I was dumbstruck.
