Harassment reduces one’s options

Long, long ago (4 or 5 decades)in a land far, far away (from the States), two friends and I each had separate tutuorials with a world-famous philosopher who seemed to many remote and forbidding. He asked for a kiss on his cheek from each of them before the tutorials began. He did not ask me. Neither situation was good; I felt I failed on a standard for female graduate students. Harassment lowers the number of good options, and may leave one with none.

Could it have been that unlike them I was respected? That’s a funny thought.
