“A better choice for someone like you”

I went to a top ten graduate program. I specialize in X, a male-dominated subject area in philosophy. In my second year of grad school, I completed a well-received paper on X. Later that term, the chair of the department came up to me, and kindly put his arm around me, saying “I don’t think you really understood what you were doing in that paper. You shouldn’t consider specializing in X. Aesthetics or ethics would be a better choice for someone like you”.

The paper was published in a top journal a year later.
