On pronoun choice

I was at an author-meets-critic session on one of my books. In that book, I tended to use the feminine pronoun rather than a masculine pronoun when referring to hypothetical or unspecified individuals. (For example, “Suppose a person is in situation X. She should then…) One of my critics first asked me, incredulously, why I confined my book to discussing women, and then publicly chastised me for being PC and “kowtowing” to feminists.
